Obesity Cures: Do You Have a Weight Loss Success to Share?
Although the centerpiece of a world of tasteless jokes on the topic of obesity, a visit to Walmart (or pretty much any big box or discount food store) makes it impossible to ignore the fact that America has a big problem: obesity. From infants to adults, obesity leads to all manner of disease -- physical, emotional, spiritual. If left unchecked, it leads to an untimely death.
At my Walmart in KY a few months ago -- felt guilty snapping the photo but it is just so telling. What is obese? A BMI (body mass index) of 30+ is the marker. Check your BMI with a calculator or use this BMI chart. This is not exact, of course, especially if you are very muscular. That said, basing BMI on weight and height should mitigate other factors and give you a very good estimation. Anyone who has tried to lose weight and keep it off knows how hard it is. Especially after years of trying and failing -- then you've got the despair of too many failures on top of what we've done to our bodies along the way. After years of yo-yo dieting, our bodies literally stop knowing HOW to maintain a normal weight! One by one your body adopts:
Insulin resistance: when your body stops storing blood sugar for fuel and just lets it go to fat (there's a bit more to it, of course).
Leptin resistance: when your body stops hearing your "I'm full" signal.
The dreaded set point: when your body adopts a weight it wants and nothing you do can will budge the needle.
Can very fat people lose weight at home?
Does it require special foods, smoothies, gyms, trainers, etc? How much exercise? How exactly does one get from being overweight to being a weight loss success story? HELP! Have you lost weight -- even a little bit -- and kept it off? We are putting together a post on the topic so that others might be helped and encouraged by your success and know-how. Please share your story: what has worked for YOU? What are you trying and how is it going? Tell us in the comments or email me here. If you wish to remain anonymous, no problem. On the other hand, if your success story is on your blog, we'll link to that, too!
What Caused America's Obesity Epidemic?
A post on Nourishing Liberty would be remiss in not mentioning the government agency(s) responsible for this uniquely American tragedy. The blame for the obesity epidemic lies squarely at the feet of the USDA:
Its food pyramid is a big fat lie from every perspective.
Allowing GMOs into the food supply. Americans started eating GMOs in 1996. By 2010, obesity was skyrocketing. Cause or coincidence? This is a relationship worth a closer look.
HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is a major player in the obesity epidemic.
Every artificial sweetener is not only a poison to the body, they encourage insulin and leptin resistance leading to weight gain.
Forcing the irradiation and pasteurization of harmless foods; promoting the shipping of foods to our plates from across the country and around the world, as though none of these things diminish our foods' nutrient content much less lead to an unhealthy gut.
"All disease begins in the gut." ~ Hippocrates, 460-370 B.C.
And perhaps the most outrageous of all: discouraging local foods, local farmers, free trade of food among neighbors and the fear-mongering associated with all of it.
Shame on the USDA for being charged with food safety (HA!) and instead being directly responsible for the obesity epidemic and the illness and deaths of countless Americans.
