This slogan saved my life.
Literally (more on that below). It can save yours, at least your sanity and it definitely helps you grow!
The only way to grow is to step outside your comfort zone… that brand new scary place where you don’t know how to act.
So how do you learn how to act? You do like in the movies: you watch what successful people do in those situations and you mimic them until YOU are comfortable.
Until you are successful.
You are Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady: it’s all painful at first then magnificent 💥
The first time I heard this slogan, I was in a very dark place in my life. I was completely miserable, no prospects on the horizon, in a dead end job & could not see a way out.
Then thru a series of painful realizations, God put a mentor in my life who taught me how to grow. How to grow up. How to become the person I was meant to be.
This slogan is the “how”. I started acting like the people who had grown before me. I had to do that until I was comfortable in my new skin.
Oddly, this slogan also instructs that you can stop pretending to be someone you aren't to impress other people. Pretending without a goal (the goal being “making it”) is where the fakery lies.
In true "fake it till you make it" you’re NOT pretending to be someone you aren’t. You are simply trying on a way of being, for size. To see if it fits, if it CAN fit.
I found such freedom in this!!! I could stop pretending that I have it all together (because I DON’T). I could just be me taking advantage of a growth opportunity.
If your kids come to you and ask how to be a better person, don’t you tell them to “act better”? To do things they’ve never done before? Think in a way they never have before? Find a way to make that new behavior STICK?
That's true fake it till you make it!!! It’s brilliant. It makes adopting a new outlook, new habits, so simple!
And the truth is you don’t have to understand it. Just put on the shoes and walk that way.
